Joe Fedewa has been writing about technology for over a decade. If you want a free desktop version of SketchUp, it's still a great option. The good news is that Trimble still offers this version in an official capacity, although it's no longer receiving updates. The last version of SketchUp Make was released in 2017. When Trimble acquired SketchUp, it forked the product into several tiers, keeping the free desktop version around as "SketchUp Make." The SketchUp web app is decent and might be good enough for many people, but for a long time, the desktop version was completely free, too. If you want the latest full desktop app, you're looking at $300 a year for personal use. At the time of this writing, the only modern free version of SketchUp is a web app. SketchUp has changed hands a few times over the years, once having been owned by Google, and currently owned by a company called Trimble. Trimble even warns it might have security problems as it hasn't been updated since 2017. However, as of May 2022, the official SketchUp website is no longer offering the free version (SketchUp Make 2017) for download. This means that Pro users will see two new layers in add location: “Satellite” and “Map”. UPDATE: The new data layers are now available in SU 2017. We’ll be rolling out some of this functionality to SketchUp before May 22nd so you can try the new functionality and adjust your workflow while still having the flexibility to fall back on your current behavior as needed.īe sure to visit the Help Center link above for more specific details! Unfortunately this isn’t an optional update, the data available from Google terrain servers will not be available to us after May so we’re working hard to ensure we have the highest quality data available and we will remain a leader in our ease of use with location data. This is a huge announcement which will affect everyone who does any sort of location based modeling in SketchUp, and we’re aware of this. In addition the photo-texures feature will no longer be available in any version. ![]() SketchUp Make will see satellite imagery and terrain features replaced by a map layer. This is all happening at the end of May, after which Add Location will only function in SketchUp 2017. This change will affect all SketchUp Make users, regardless of version, and will affect SketchUp Pro users on varying levels. Specifically, we’re moving away from the Google provided geographic data.
