Sketchup make 2017 vs sketchup12/15/2023 Joe loves all things technology and is also an avid DIYer at heart. He has been covering Android and the rest of the Google ecosystem for years, reviewing devices, hosting podcasts, filming videos, and writing tutorials. Joe Fedewa has been writing about technology for over a decade. If you want a free desktop version of SketchUp, it's still a great option. The good news is that Trimble still offers this version in an official capacity, although it's no longer receiving updates. The last version of SketchUp Make was released in 2017. When Trimble acquired SketchUp, it forked the product into several tiers, keeping the free desktop version around as "SketchUp Make." The SketchUp web app is decent and might be good enough for many people, but for a long time, the desktop version was completely free, too. If you want the latest full desktop app, you're looking at $300 a year for personal use. At the time of this writing, the only modern free version of SketchUp is a web app. SketchUp has changed hands a few times over the years, once having been owned by Google, and currently owned by a company called Trimble. Trimble even warns it might have security problems as it hasn't been updated since 2017. However, as of May 2022, the official SketchUp website is no longer offering the free version (SketchUp Make 2017) for download. Update #2: Adjusted what Pro users see for Map & Satellite data, with the available data change we now have simpler options for Map vs Satellite data. This worked when we published it in 2021. For more info check out FAQ for Add Location changes in SketchUp | SketchUp Help. Google Satellite is no longer an option for any version of SketchUp. This means that Pro users will see two new layers in add location: “Satellite” and “Map”. UPDATE: The new data layers are now available in SU 2017. We’ll be rolling out some of this functionality to SketchUp before May 22nd so you can try the new functionality and adjust your workflow while still having the flexibility to fall back on your current behavior as needed.īe sure to visit the Help Center link above for more specific details! Unfortunately this isn’t an optional update, the data available from Google terrain servers will not be available to us after May so we’re working hard to ensure we have the highest quality data available and we will remain a leader in our ease of use with location data. This is a huge announcement which will affect everyone who does any sort of location based modeling in SketchUp, and we’re aware of this. In addition the photo-texures feature will no longer be available in any version. SketchUp Make will see satellite imagery and terrain features replaced by a map layer. This is all happening at the end of May, after which Add Location will only function in SketchUp 2017. This change will affect all SketchUp Make users, regardless of version, and will affect SketchUp Pro users on varying levels. We’re sure you’ll have a ton of questions so we’ve already posted our most expected questions in the Help Center here: FAQ for Add Location changes in SketchUp | SketchUp Help This has important implications for both satellite imagery and terrain features for some versions of SketchUp. Specifically, we’re moving away from the Google provided geographic data. We have a pretty big announcement coming down the pike that we feel you’ll appreciate knowing about sooner than later so you can plan accordingly.

The result of this has been numerous world records in a variety of road racing and distance running events as well a sharp increase in personal best times. In other words, the same race effort that a runner gives in a normal running shoe will result in a faster pace when running in a “super shoe”. What’s the deal with these carbon-fiber plated racing shoes?Ĭarbon-fiber racing shoes, sometimes referred to as “super shoes”, combine bouncy lightweight midsole foams with a carbon-fiber plate to create a light and springy shoe that improves running economy by reducing the amount of work a runner must do while running at a given speed. The latest development that has been taking the running world by storm the last couple years, and will be on display at the Tokyo Olympics, has been carbon-fiber plated racing shoes. Throughout modern Olympic history, track & field and marathon running has gone through advancements in track surfaces, training methodologies, clothing, and footwear construction and materials. Who doesn’t want the forbidden fruit?” Sports Biomechanics Founder Ray Fredericksen said Spira is “already comparable to the best running shoes on the market.” But Gregory notes while Spira has “carved a niche among people with foot ailments,” in the athletic market, Spira is “still near the starting blocks.” The shoes are in 700 retail stores but did not “test well at Foot Locker,” and the $130 price deters some consumers from buying a brand “they have never heard of.” Andy Krafsur said the shoes are “ugly. may be incorporated in the shoes.” But while Spira CEO Andy Krafsur and his brother, Spira President David Krafsur, are fighting the ban, Gregory writes, “For a new brand trying to stand out in a crowded field, such a ban is a boon for business. While Spira uses springs in the soles of its shoes as “shock absorbers, reducing the stress on your feet,” USATF has banned the shoes for violating its rule stating “no spring. Sales for four-year-old, Texas-based Spira Footwear jumped from $650,000 in ’02 to $3.9M last year, and the company “now turns a profit and is on pace to double sales” in ‘05, according to Sean Gregory of TIME’s INSIDE BUSINESS. Kickstart Your Career in the Armed Services Very scary jack o lantern12/15/2023 “The minute the lights came on, a lot of the stories lost their potency, and people’s imaginations weren’t running as wild,” Mannion says. People thought it was Jack of the Lantern, a lost soul, or a ghost.”Īs Ireland began the process of nationwide electrification in the 1930s, the tale of Stingy Jack started to fade. “If you were to try to follow the light, you could go into a sinkhole or bog, or drown. Also known as fool’s fire, fairy lights, will-o’-the-wisp, and eventually, jack-o’-lantern, it often seemed like “a floating flame that would move away from travelers,” Mannion says. The story also helped explain ignis fatuus, a natural phenomenon that occurs in marshlands and bogs-such as those in Ireland’s countryside-producing flickering lights as gases from decomposing organic matter combust. “It was also used as a cautionary tale, a morality tale, that Jack was a soul trapped between two worlds, and if you behaved like he did you could end up like that, too,” Mannion says. But the devil took some pity on Jack, giving him an ember of coal to light his turnip lantern as he wandered between both places for eternity-again inspiring the nickname Jack-of-the-Lantern, or jack-o’-lantern. When Jack died, he found himself barred from heaven-and from hell. Dozens of versions abound, but one recurring storyline is that Stingy Jack tricked the devil twice. Then there’s the 18th-century Irish folktale of Stingy Jack, an unsavory fellow often said to be a blacksmith who had a fondness for mischief and booze. According to Merriam-Webster, in 17th-century Britain it was common to call a man whose name you didn’t know “Jack.” A night watchman, for example, became known as “Jack-of-the-Lantern,” or jack-o’-lantern. The origins of jack-o’-lanterns aren’t limited to produce the term also referred to people. A plaster cast of a carved turnip lantern common during the early 1900s-called a “ghost turnip” and complete with craggy teeth and sinister eye slits-haunts the museum’s permanent exhibitions. Visitors to the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life, in County Mayo, can see firsthand how terrifying those turnips could look. “Over time people started to carve faces and designs to allow light to shine through the holes without extinguishing the ember.” “Metal lanterns were quite expensive, so people would hollow out root vegetables,” he says. ( Related: These paper crafts bring the party on Day of the Dead.)Ī practical purpose also evolved, says Mannion. To ward off restless souls, people donned costumes and carved frightening faces into root vegetables such as beets, potatoes, and turnips-usually plentiful after the recent harvest. On Samhain eve, October 31, spirits of the dead were thought to mingle with the living. The idea took deeper hold during the Celtic festival of Samhain, which was originally celebrated on November 1 and inspired many traditions of modern-day Halloween. “It’s quite macabre, but it may have symbolized the severed heads of your enemies.” “It may even have had pre-Christian origins that evolved from the custom of head veneration, or potentially even represented war trophies taken from your foes,” says Nathan Mannion, senior curator for EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, in Dublin. The concept of using a round fruit or vegetable to depict a human face goes back thousands of years in some northern European Celtic cultures. Although the legendary Headless Horseman and his hurled pumpkin have been scaring Americans for generations, jack-o’-lanterns actually trace their origins back centuries to Old World traditions in countries including Ireland, England, and Scotland.Īlong the way, pagan rituals, freaky folktales, and natural phenomena have interwoven to create a fascinating history that’s part fact, part fiction, and all frightfully fun. The backstory of jack-o’-lanterns, including how they came to star in Halloween decor and why they’re carved in the first place, is a tale worth telling. For decades, carving a pumpkin has been a beloved fall tradition in America, celebrated with parties, festivals, and televised competitions. There’s no more classic Halloween image than a glowing jack-o’-lantern perched in a window or on a porch, setting a merrily macabre mood. Dungeon hunter 2 last boss12/15/2023
